Deadline for prepaid reservations is 10-06-10. In addition, an honorary reception will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 5:30pm to 7:00pm, at the Seasons community clubhouse in Boca Raton, FL. This reception is by invitation only, and honors our nominees, our nominators, our sponsors, and our members. Official photographs of our nominees will be taken at this reception. First-timers are oriented on Soroptimist and our "Women of Distinction" purpose. The "Women of Distinction" event has many purposes. Soroptimists seek to honor the many outstanding women in our local community who give back to our community through leadership, volunteer, professional, and educational efforts. Soroptimist regular members do not nominate candidates. We call upon other leaders within our community to select nominees. As such, Soroptimist also honor these nominators. The "Women of Distinction" event is our largest fund-raiser of the year. These funds are then donated to a large assortment of other charities, and needy individuals within our community over time. Any interested charitable cause can contact us throughout the year for donation consideration. Our focus is to raise money and give money to women and children, both locally and around the world, who have demonstrated great need and great ability to improve their own lives, as well as the lives of those around them. If you would like to sponsor this event, please contact KIM CHAMPION via e-mail kim@championhome.com or by phone 561-347-0440 (c/o Champion Home Health Care.) If you would like an ad in our event program, please contact TERI MARTIN via e-mail plannedperfect@aol.com or by phone 954-816-7545. Judging: Each year, one active member of our Soroptimist club volunteers to chair the judging committee. She selects a panel of non-Soroptimist, independent, and annonymous judges. These judges meet privately with the chair and review all documentation submitted for each nominee. The documentation for each nominee is collected by the chair of the nominee committee. The Nominee chair is also an active Soroptimist member within our club who volunteers her time for this project. The nomination process takes about four months from start to finish. Depending on each year's nominees, the field is divided into common groups, such as education, volunteerism, professional, medical, etc. If more than one group is established by the judging and nominee committees, then one winner will be determined for each group. Sometimes the judges reach a tie within a group of nominees, and thus select two winners from the same group. Every year presents different challenges for the judges! Because the Soroptimist mission is to help women and girls, nominees with similar backgrounds are of special interest to the judges. Program Listing of Nominees: The highlight of each year's printed program for the "Women of Distinction Awards" breakfast is the biographical sketch of each nominee. A frequent question typically asked by a nominator or a nominee is, "Why doesn't the blurb in the program match the profile that I submitted to Soroptimist?" The Nominee chair edits all nominee profiles to conform to the formating of the printed program. Some nominees and nominators enthusiastically submitt pages of information to Soroptimist! The nominee chair has quite an editing challenge to meet the constraints of the printed program! |
